La construcción de una colonia lunar auto-sustentable ha dejado de ser ciencia-ficción, para convertirse en una realidad a corto plazo.
Chocará contra la Luna a principios de 2007, pero ya se está lanzando otro proyecto sueco, diseñado para lograr un impacto duradero en la forma en que percibimos a nuestra compañera cósmica. El Dr. Niklas Järvstråt, un científico de materiales de muy buena reputación, ideó un plan para colocar una colonia en la superficie lunar hace ya casi diez años, mucho antes de que el presidente Bush revelara sus grandes planes para una base lunar. Ahora, el Dr. Järvstråt y el Centro-SMART sueco ha conjuntado un consorcio internacional consistente en más de 50 socios, incluyendo a industrias como las japonesas Shimizu Corporation y Orbitech, un contratista estadounidense de la NASA, e instituciones académicas tales como la francesa Ecole des Mines y la inglesa Universidad de Cranfield. “El principio es simple, pero no tradicional. Es lógico, sostenible y se encuentra dentro de nuestras posibilidades, tanto materialmente como financieramente. ¿Por qué tratar a un proyecto espacial como una unidad descartable, cuando es posible construir una base que pueda medrar, expandirse, y mejorar la presencia benevolente del hombre en el espacio? Ese fue el fundamento de la idea del Dr. Järvstråt. Siendo un científico de materiales, delineó un plan para una colonia donde pudieran vivir hombres, mujeres y niños, sin la necesidad de un suministro continuo de materiales y tecnología de la Tierra; una colonia auto-sustentable donde el gran círculo de la vida pudiera ser mantenido en su totalidad con materias primas lunares y donde todos los productos necesarios para la vida pudieran ser manufacturados in situ.
La colonia apunta a ser auto-sustentable en sus requerimientos, pero sin embargo funcionará en simbiosis con la Tierra. Como resultado, el comercio entre la colonia lunar y nuestro planeta florecerá, con la colonia contribuyendo en el desarrollo de actividades científicas y de investigación, tales como, por ejemplo, el suministro de energía alternativa basada en avances de la energía de fusión del helio-3, y la provisión de materiales estructurales para espacionaves y satélites, tanto para orbitar alrededor de la Tierra como para viajar al espacio profundo. En estos tiempos de potenciales carencias de combustibles fósiles, amenazas de calentamiento global, enfrentamientos culturales y explosión demográfica, este concepto podría muy bien ser lo que detenga la sobre-explotación por el hombre de la Madre Tierra, uniendo gobiernos y naciones, científicos y ciudadanos comunes en cooperación y comprensión mutua. Esta iniciativa de investigación está integrada con actividades ya en marcha en el Centro-SMART en Trollhättan, una parte de la Universidad West, y una organización paraguas para seis áreas de investigación en tecnología de manufacturación; una de esas áreas es única en su investigación sobre manufacturación auto-suficiente. El Centro posee instalaciones excelentes, tanto en el campus como fuera de él, y se ufana de poseer una mezcla única de valores académicos tradicionales en investigación y educación, combinados con un enfoque moderno de aplicación práctica ampliamente apoyado por gigantes industriales nacionales e internacionales. La investigación comenzará a mediados de 2006, con la intención de expandirse hasta una instalación de proceso de manufacturación auto-suficiente a gran escala, a lo largo de un período de cinco años. Durante este lapso, se solicitarán nuevos fondos y se fortalecerá la cooperación internacional.
